Note

In the work Tao Te Ching there are such sentences like that when having won victory in the war, handle such occasions as funeral ceremonies, here Lao-zi does not mean to entirely negate the function of ritual, but points out the limitation of ritual which does not meet the needs of the times. Ritual is the product after the Great Tao is discarded. We should negate constantly from the highest ritual, the highest righteousness to the highest humanity and sublimate them into the highest virtue so as to advance with the times and return to our original nature and to achieve that He who holds fast on to the intangible Great Image goes about everywhere in the world, yet he won't suffer harm, but all will be peaceful, placid and safe. (chapter 35)

It's a pity that at that time Confucius didn't accept the advice from Lao-zi. After returing, he gasped in admiration before his disciples: "I met Lao-zi today, he looks just like an omnipotent dragon!" Futurity regard it as a praise of the dragon.

Although Confucius didn't start out from the Great Tao but by 'Ren (humanity), Yi (justice), Li (ritual) ' to rectify the people's heart, such also played a great role in the history.( A Biography of Lao-zi )

Man follows the example of the Earth; the Earth follows the example of Heaven; Heaven follows the example of Tao. Tao follows the example of nature. (chapter 25)

In the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, the Confucius' A Praise Of The Dragon has it that Birds I know they can fly; fish, I know they can swim; beasts I know they can run. What can run may be captured in nets; what can swim may be fished with a hook and line; what can fly may be shot with arrow. As for dragon, I don't know it, may it ride on the wind and clouds to the sky? Today I met Lao-zi, he looks just like an omnipotent dragon! (Sima Qian, The Biographies of Lao-zi Historical Records)

The most perfect virtue is like that of water, which is good at benefiting all things but never strives for personal gain.(chapter 8, Tao Te Ching )
